On Friday (8 pm CET) Brose Bamberg will face the reigning Turkish Airlines EuroLeague champion Fenerbahce Dogus Istanbul. Telekomsport will be broadcasting live. The Game will be presented by Guampa Energy. Brose Bamberg officials are asking all the fans to arrive early at BROSE ARENA as the security measures might lead to longer waiting periods at the entrances.
Head coach Andreas Trinchieri is expecting a big night in Freak City not only because of the champ’s quality on the court but also because of two players that played a major role in Trinchieri’s career in Bamberg.
Fenerbahce did not only lose Bogdan Bogdanovic (Sacramento Kings) but also the MVP of the EuroleagLeague FinalFour, Ekpe Udoh. The reason that the Turkish’ quality did not drop as many might have expected is to be found in the players that Fenerbahce added during the offseason. As Jason Thompson strengthened Istanbul’s big men rotation providing strength under the basket, they also added a new power forward and a point guard who are well known in Bamberg. Nicolo Melli and Brad Wanamaker decided to join Europe’s best. While Melli is mostly active at the boards (8.0 points and 6.8 rebounds per game) Wanamaker creates scoring by putting up 12.0 points and dishing out 4.4 assists per game. Fenerbahce’s top scorers are Luigi Datome who averages 14 points and Jan Vesely who adds 5.0 reboungs to his scoring output of 12.4 points. Guard Ali Muhammed might make his comeback to the EuroLeague after not being able to play in a single game so far this season. In the last matchup between the two teams he scored 26 points.
Even though the Turkish team added a lot of quality to its roster, Fenerbahce is still behind the own expectations standing at eighth place only one seed ahead of Brose Bamberg. They have already lost to Malaga and Panathinaikos Athens.
Andrea Trinchieri: “It’s a special night for us. It’s a special night for Bamberg. Seeing Nicolo and Brad wearing the jersey of the best team in Europe is very emotional. It is a big thing. We definitely have to push ourselves way above the limit. But what is most important: We have to enjoy the moment. We have to work hard and must not be afraid so that we are able to compete.”
