On Friday (6 pm CET) Brose Bamberg (13th) will face the leader of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague CSKA Moscow. Telekomsport will broadcast the game of the 20th round live.
Five days after the much discussed loss against Munich in the German cup quarterfinals the German champion will face an European top team. The balance sheet against the champion of 2016 says it all: Brose was only able to win one game out of 15. This win came on march 24th 2016. Bamberg bet the big rival by 91:83 in the TOP16. The following games went to Moscow by an average margin of 13 points. The “Central Sports Club of the Army“ also won the first leg of this season by 92:76. The Germans’ top scorer in the loss was Augustine Rubit (16).
Bamberg’s current topscorers are Ricky Hickman (12.2) and Dorell Wright (11.1). Wright (5.6) also collects the second most rebounds behind Dejan Musli (6.5). The opponent’s best player is Nando De Colo. The French international is the league’s third best scorer averaging 16.5 per game. He also hits nearly 53percent of his three point attempts and 96 percent of his free throws – and Moscow stands at the line many times. No other team is fouled more often. And no other team scores more points. Moscow also has the best shooting percentage in the whole league.
After the loss in the first leg, Andrea Trinchieri complained about Moscow’s advantage on the boards. They won the rebound battle 36:22. Brose’s players heeded his words. During their last five games they averaged 36 rebounds while CSKA only had 33. Still Moscow won four out of five games while Bamberg has the opposite record.
Still Moscow is not invincible and also Moscow has to suffer from the tough schedule. Four losses are in their EuroLeague record. In their domestic VTB-League they stand only in third place. Last, they have lost to Zenit St. Petersburg and – at home – to Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar. On Monday they ended their short series of losses with a win against Novogorod.
Bamberg still has many players out: Bryce Taylor, Luka Mitrovic and Elias Harris are missing due to injury. Head coach Andrea Trinchieri is out after his successful shoulder surgery. He will be back on the sideline in February at the earliest.
Ilias Kanztouris: „We head to Moscow and want to keep up as long as possible. We know their strengths but also their weaknesses. We have to be in the game mentally for 40 minutes and cannot afford a period of weakness. We want to keep up our upward trend.”
